The Basilica di San Zeno, or San Zeno Maggiore, is a prominent landmark in Verona, northern Italy. Built between 967 and 1398 AD, it stands as a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Not only is the basilica famous for its stunning design, but it also holds significant historical importance. Moreover, it is traditionally considered the location where Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet were married.
The church stands on the site of at least five earlier religious buildings. Its origins trace back to Saint Zeno of Verona, who died between 372 and 380. Initially, the first church was built over his tomb, but by the 9th century, it was deemed inadequate. As a result, Bishop Ratoldo and King Pepin of Italy decided to rebuild it on a grander scale. Consequently, they consecrated the new church on December 8, 806, and moved Saint Zeno’s body to the crypt in 807.
Unfortunately, the church suffered significant damage during the Hungarian invasions between 899 and 933. In response, Bishop Raterio launched a reconstruction project in 967. By the early 12th century, renovations began in the Romanesque style. However, an earthquake in 1117 temporarily halted the work. Nevertheless, despite these setbacks, the church’s structure remained largely intact, with only minor modifications made over time.
Notable features of the basilica include the bronze panels on the portal, the impressive rose window known as the “Wheel of Fortune,” and the altarpiece by Andrea Mantegna. Additionally, the basilica has inspired poets like Dante Alighieri and Giosuè Carducci. In 1973, it earned the title of minor basilica. Today, it continues to serve as a parish within the Verona Centro I vicariate.
