The Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows in Bohosudov, known locally as Bazilika Panny Marie Bolestné, stands proudly in the town center on the main square. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in northern Bohemia and attracts many visitors each year. In 1911, it was the second most visited pilgrimage destination in the Diocese of Litoměřice and ranked fifth across Bohemia. Before the Basilica in Filipov was built in 1885, this site held the record as the most frequented Marian shrine in northern Bohemia.
Pilgrimages continue actively today. Every year, about 500 Sorbs from nearby German Lusatia come to the basilica for a joint religious event. This gathering highlights the church’s ongoing cultural and spiritual role. The site’s origins go back to 1426 when a small chapel, likely wooden, was first built. It was expanded in 1507, but by 1620 it had fallen into disrepair. Local communities rebuilt it between 1621 and 1624, showing their dedication.
The current Baroque basilica began construction in 1701 under Giulius and Octavius Broggi. By 1708, they completed the twin towers on the western façade, adding architectural grandeur to the church. Since 1964, the basilica has been protected as a cultural monument. Then, in 2018, it was elevated to the status of a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This recognition ensures its preservation and honors its historical and cultural importance.
