The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercè, often called La Mercè, is a beautiful Baroque church in Plaça de la Mercè, at the center of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. As a designated cultural asset of local interest, it holds great value for the city's history and faith. It was built between 1765 and 1775 by architect Josep Mas i Dordal. He replaced an older Gothic church that had honored Our Lady of Mercè, the city’s patron saint.
Unlike the earlier structure, the new church reflected the grandeur of 18th-century Baroque design. Over time, it became both a place of worship and a symbol of Barcelona’s civic identity. Even today, it continues to serve those roles.
Originally, the church belonged to the larger Convent of La Mercè. However, in the 19th century, Spanish authorities seized church properties, and the convent's use changed. Today, it houses the offices of the Captaincy General of the Fourth Military Region, showing how historic spaces adapt to new roles.
Furthermore, the basilica plays a central part in the city's annual La Mercè Festival. Every September, the area fills with music, dancing, fireworks, and joy. This celebration keeps the church closely tied to local tradition.
