The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, also known as the Insigne and National Basilica, is a Catholic sanctuary. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary under her title of Guadalupe. The basilica is located at the foot of Tepeyac Hill, in the Gustavo A. Madero borough of Mexico City. This site is part of the Primatial Archdiocese of Mexico and is under the jurisdiction of the Episcopal Vicariate of Guadalupe.
Since November 26, 2023, Canon Efraín Hernández Díaz has been in charge of the sanctuary. He also serves as the general vicar and rector of the basilica. The Basilica of Guadalupe is the most visited Marian sanctuary in the world, second only to St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
Every year, approximately 20 million pilgrims visit the sanctuary. Nearly 9 million of them arrive around December 12, the day dedicated to the Virgin. This religious phenomenon attracts more visitors than other well-known Marian shrines.
The sanctuary has become a symbol of unity and faith for many Mexicans and believers worldwide. Each visit is an act of deep devotion. The basilica also reflects Mexico's popular religiosity.
