The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady of Szentkút is a revered Roman Catholic shrine in Hungary. Although it belongs to Mátraverebély, it stands close to the settlement of Szentkút. Therefore, many visitors refer to it simply as “Szentkút.” According to legend, Saint Ladislaus visited the valley in 1091. At that time, he was fleeing from the pursuing Cumans. Eventually, he reached a cliff, with no way forward. In that moment, he leapt over the precipice on horseback. As a result, they landed safely. Miraculously, a spring gushed from the ground where the horse landed.

Since then, the spring has been seen as holy and healing. Over time, many pilgrims reported miracles after visiting the site. Consequently, in 1700, Pope Clement XI launched an official investigation. After careful study, the Pope accepted the healings as genuine. Thus, the site gained greater spiritual importance.

Over the centuries, the number of visitors steadily increased. Today, nearly 200,000 pilgrims arrive each year. Some attend holy masses. Others come quietly to pray and reflect. Furthermore, many seek the water’s healing powers. Because of its spiritual value, the Church elevated it to the rank of Basilica Minor.
