The Basilica del Carmine, also known as I Carmini, is a Catholic church in Padua, Italy. The church originated in the 13th century and stands on land once called Isola di San Giacomo. It overlooks a space, once used as a churchyard and cemetery, now known as Piazza Francesco Petrarca. In the 14th century, the Order of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel took charge of the church and turned it into a large religious complex. This order managed the complex until 1806, after which the church underwent significant changes.
In 1810, after the authorities suppressed the ancient church of San Giacomo, the Carmine church took over its parish title. The church then came under the jurisdiction of the secular clergy. Over time, the convent complex adapted and served various purposes. Starting in 1576, people traveled to the church for a public vow on October 12th. This vow connected to the miraculous events of the Madonna di dietro Corte or Madonna dei Lumini. These miracles occurred during the 1575-1576 plague in Padua, and locals continue to venerate the Madonna. They ask for her help in protecting the health of the city and its territory.
In 1914, Pope Pius X declared the church a Sanctuary. Later, in October 1960, Pope John XXIII elevated it to a minor basilica. Today, the Basilica del Carmine serves as the heart of one of Padua’s largest and most populous parishes. The Scuola del Carmine, located next to the Basilica, further adds to the cultural and historical significance of the site.
