St. Anthony’s Basilica in Dornahalli, Karnataka, attracts thousands of pilgrims every year because it serves as a major Catholic shrine dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. The basilica blends spiritual importance with centuries of history, inspiring devotion among visitors and pilgrims from across southern India. Moreover, the church reflects the faith and dedication of the local Catholic community. They have nurtured this sacred site for generations.
About two hundred years ago, a farmer ploughed his field in Dornahalli and discovered a wooden statue of St. Anthony of Padua. He immediately built a small place of worship in honor of the saint. This simple shrine marked the beginning of organized devotion at the site. Later, the community constructed a larger church in the middle of the nineteenth century. They replaced it again in 1920 to accommodate more devotees and provide a spacious area for prayer.
When the church deteriorated, parishioners demolished it in 1969 and rebuilt a modern structure. They preserved and renovated the facade from 1920, blending historical elements with contemporary architecture. The present church forms a Tau-shaped cross. It hosts around one thousand worshippers. It also houses a small relic of St. Anthony brought from Italy, which inspires devotion among pilgrims.
Furthermore, Pope Francis elevated the shrine by granting it the title of Minor Basilica on 17 October 2019. This recognition increased its significance within the global Catholic community. Consequently, St. Anthony’s Basilica serves as a vibrant spiritual center that offers daily Mass, guidance, and opportunities for prayer while preserving centuries of religious tradition in Dornahalli.
