The St. Mary, Queen of Peace Basilica is located in the busy Palayam/Cantonment area of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Moreover, it serves as an important center of faith, culture, and history. The church attracts devotees and tourists who admire its spiritual and architectural beauty. In fact, it is the first Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in Kerala to be elevated to a basilica. At the same time, it is the fifth basilica in the state, showing the growing influence of the Syro-Malankara Catholic community.
The announcement of its elevation came on 10 November 2008. Leonardo Sandri, the Papal representative and Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Catholic Churches, declared at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Pattom, Trivandrum, that the Queen of Peace Pro-Cathedral would become a basilica. As a result, this news excited the faithful and church leaders. Soon after, Major Archbishop Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos dedicated the church as the St. Mary, Queen of Peace Basilica on 7 December 2008. The ceremony drew clergy, government officials, and community members. Furthermore, Kerala Minister for Law, Sports, and Youth Affairs M. Vijayakumar presided over a meeting that followed, highlighting the church’s importance as a spiritual and cultural landmark.
Today, the basilica serves as a center of worship, celebration, and inspiration. It hosts regular services, special festivals, and community events. In addition, visitors experience its peaceful atmosphere and admire its design, which combines tradition with modernity. Therefore, the church reflects the growth and recognition of the Syro-Malankara Catholic tradition in Kerala and beyond.
Overall, by combining devotion, history, and community engagement, the St. Mary, Queen of Peace Basilica continues to inspire generations of worshippers. Thus, it remains a prominent landmark in Thiruvananthapuram.
