Cathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle, Tunja, Colombia

The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Tunja, officially the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Santiago the Apostle of Tunja, is the oldest Catholic cathedral in Colombia. Moreover, it honors Saint James the Greater, who serves as its patron. Consequently, it attracts worshippers and pilgrims from across the region. The cathedral also plays a central role in the religious and civic life of Tunja, the capital of Boyacá.

Furthermore, the cathedral serves as the main temple of the Archdiocese of Tunja and functions as the archiepiscopal seat. Pope Leo XIII elevated the diocese through the bull Infinitus Amor, published on July 29, 1880. As a result, the cathedral became a key center for diocesan events and religious ceremonies that strengthen the faith of the local community.

Construction began in 1567, when Juan de Castellanos and Gonzalo Suárez Rendón commissioned Pedro Gutiérrez as master builder. The cathedral reflects Isabelline Gothic architecture, while later renovations added neoclassical elements. Its single tower rises above the city, and its three naves with side chapels create an impressive interior. Additionally, the Renaissance-style main cover, designed by Bartolomé Carrión in 1598, highlights artistic achievement.

Because of its historical and cultural value, the cathedral forms part of Tunja’s historic sector. Law 163 of December 30, 1959, declared the sector a national monument of Colombia. Today, the cathedral remains a symbol of faith, culture, and heritage. At the same time, it continues to inspire visitors and locals alike, preserving both its spiritual significance and architectural grandeur for future generations.
