Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Potosí, Bolivia
The Cathedral of the Imperial Villa of Potosí stands proudly in Plaza 10 de Noviembre, at the heart of the city. Although its style appears simple from afar, it holds great historical and artistic value. It serves as a minor basilica and belongs to the Diocese of Potosí. Originally, the site held an older church, which collapsed in 1807. As a result, Friar Manuel de Sanahuja led the construction of a new cathedral in 1808.
Moreover, Sanahuja, a Spanish Franciscan and architect, introduced neoclassical design to the region. While designing the cathedral, he also worked on several other religious and civic projects. Eventually, he moved to La Paz, where he continued to work until his death in 1834. Thus, the Cathedral of Potosí marked both the peak and the conclusion of major neoclassical cathedral design in Latin America.
Furthermore, the cathedral's exterior features strong stonework and a balanced blend of Baroque and neoclassical elements. Inside, it preserves many important religious relics made of gold and silver. In addition, the church contains a large pipe organ donated by mining magnate Simón I. Patiño. Thanks to these treasures, visitors experience both artistic beauty and historical richness. One section also functions as a religious art museum, which highlights the region’s devotion and craftsmanship.
Construction officially began on September 6, 1808. Despite various challenges, workers completed the cathedral by 1836. Two years later, on April 4, 1838, Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz led its solemn consecration. Therefore, the cathedral gained national recognition as a religious and cultural landmark.
Today, the cathedral continues to attract tourists, historians, and worshippers alike. Because of its location, design, and history, it remains a vital symbol of Potosí's colonial past and Bolivia’s spiritual heritage.

Airways:
The nearest airport to Potosí is Captain Nicolás Rojas Airport (POI), located about 7 kilometers from the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. It offers limited domestic flights, primarily to and from La Paz and Santa Cruz. For more frequent flight options, travelers can use Alcantarí International Airport (SRE) in Sucre, which is approximately 165 kilometers away.
Railways:
Potosí has a railway station located around 2 to 3 kilometers from the cathedral. However, passenger rail services are very limited or inactive, with the railway network mainly used for freight. Rail is not a reliable travel option for reaching Potosí at present.
Roadways:
Potosí is well connected by road to major cities in Bolivia. The city can be reached by bus from Sucre (165 km, 3–4 hours), Oruro (325 km, 6–7 hours), and La Paz (540 km, 10–12 hours). Long-distance buses arrive at the Potosí Bus Terminal, located about 4 kilometers from the cathedral. Local taxis and minibuses are available for transport within the city.
