The Basilica of Regina Pacis, meaning Queen of Peace in Latin, is a Catholic parish church in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. It serves the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and has strong roots in the Italian-American community.
The church began as a votive shrine during World War II. Parishioners of St. Rosalia Church built it as a sign of faith and hope for peace. The original parish, founded in 1905, was soon called the “Mother Church of Italian Immigrants” because of its importance to newcomers from Italy.
Over time, the parish grew, and the name changed to St. Rosalia-Regina Pacis. This reflected both the growth of the community and the shrine’s increasing importance. People gathered not just to worship, but also to connect with shared traditions and values.
In November 2012, Pope Benedict XVI gave the church the title of minor basilica. This rare honor recognized its deep spiritual significance and historical role in the diocese.
Later, in June 2017, the Diocese of Brooklyn closed St. Rosalia Church and named the basilica as the new parish church. Since then, it has continued to welcome parishioners from across Brooklyn.
Today, the basilica remains a place of active worship and cultural pride. Masses, celebrations, and community events keep the spirit of the original founders alive. With its rich history and lasting mission, the Basilica of Regina Pacis still offers peace, beauty, and faith to all who enter.
