Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Boston, USA
The Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, also known as The Mission Church, stands in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. It opened in 1870 and has served the local Catholic community for over 150 years. Since the beginning, Redemptorist priests from the Baltimore Province have ministered to the parish. They have offered spiritual guidance, celebrating Mass and administering sacraments regularly. In addition, the shrine honors the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Our Mother of Perpetual Help. This title holds special meaning for many faithful who visit for prayer and comfort.
Over time, the church gained importance within the Archdiocese of Boston. Recognizing its significance, Pope Pius XII raised the shrine to the status of a Minor Basilica on September 8, 1954. He did this through a formal document called the Pontifical Decree Ornatur Urbs et Archidiocesis. Monsignor Gildo Brugnola, the Grand Chancellor of Apostolic Briefs, signed and notarized the decree. Because of this, the church became not only a place of worship but also a pilgrimage site for Catholics.
Today, the basilica remains an active and vibrant religious community. It holds regular Masses, confessions, and special events that invite participation from parishioners and visitors alike. Moreover, it features beautiful sacred art and architecture that inspire awe and devotion. Therefore, many people come here to experience both the spiritual atmosphere and rich history. The Mission Church continues to honor Our Mother of Perpetual Help by serving as a place of faith, prayer, and service to all who enter its doors.
