Basilica of St. Stephen and Our Lady of Bogucice in Katowice, Poland
The Basilica of St. Stephen and Our Lady of Bogucice is a Roman Catholic church in the Bogucice district of Katowice, Poland. It belongs to the parish of St. Stephen and appears on the register of immovable monuments of the Silesian Voivodeship.
Built between 1892 and 1894, the church reflects the neo-Gothic style popular during that period. Local tradition credits architect Paul Jackisch with the design. At the time, Bogucice’s growing population needed another place of worship, and this church became the third parish in the area.
The building stands at the corner of Ks. Ludwika Markiefki and Leopolda Streets. Its tall spire, pointed arches, and red brick façade make it a visible landmark in the neighborhood.
On June 21, 2015, church authorities granted the title of minor basilica to the building. This honor recognized its religious and cultural significance, as well as its long-standing role in the spiritual life of the community.
The basilica also serves as a Marian sanctuary. In its main altar rests a painting of Our Lady of Bogucice, venerated by many faithful. Art historians believe the artwork dates back to the 15th century. Pilgrims regularly visit the church to honor the Virgin and offer their prayers.
Today, the Basilica of St. Stephen and Our Lady of Bogucice remains an active center of worship and community life. It hosts regular masses, religious celebrations, and parish events throughout the year. Its blend of history, faith, and architecture continues to inspire both locals and visitors alike.
As one of Katowice’s most important sacred sites, the basilica reflects the city’s heritage and its deep-rooted Catholic tradition.
