Basilica of the visitation of mary, petrovče, slovenia
The Basilica of the Visitation of Mary in Petrovče holds deep spiritual and historical significance in Slovenia. Not only does it serve as the main parish church for the local community, but it also functions as a diocesan pilgrimage center. It is one of only seven basilicas in the country and one of two within the Diocese of Celje. Since 1965, the Dominicans have faithfully overseen its spiritual care.
According to historical sources, the church was originally built in the late 14th century by the Counts of Celje. While the structure has seen many changes over time, parts of the original Gothic church still survive. These include the stone buttresses of the presbytery and the bell tower, which now has a Baroque-style roof.
As the church evolved, it received significant enhancements from the Barons Miglio, former owners of nearby Plumberk Castle. Because of their contributions, the church gained its rich Baroque style. In particular, the elaborate façade and the vibrantly decorated interior leave a lasting impression. Venetian artist Jakob Brollo painted the nave and chapels, while Anton Lerchinger completed the presbytery.
The 18th-century main altar draws special attention. It features Mary crowned, holding the Christ Child and a golden scepter, with a glowing ring on her bent finger.
Moreover, local legend adds a unique layer to the basilica’s history. Baron Franc Miglio, after vowing virginity to Mary, fainted when she curled her finger to keep the ring. He later remained true to his vow and was buried beneath the presbytery in 1752. Fanny Hausmann, a poet and early benefactor, rests beside him.
Finally, in 1984, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to basilica status, affirming its national and spiritual importance.
