Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Poland
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Dąbrowa Górnicza stands as an important religious site in the Sosnowiec diocese. The church honors Our Lady of the Angels, represented by a cedar wood figure carved in 1904 by Józef Baltazar Proszowski. Since the late 19th century, people in the Dąbrowa Basin have increasingly venerated Our Lady, known as the Queen of Angels.
The parish of Our Lady of the Angels began in 1891, thanks to Bishop Tomasz Kuliński of Kielce. Then, in 1897, the painting of the "Queen of Angels" arrived in the Dąbrowa church. From the start, many faithful showed great devotion to this image. As a result, people have experienced many graces through her intercession. They have also left numerous votive offerings as thanks for these blessings.
Importantly, the church gained special recognition from the Holy See. It became the first sanctuary in Poland to receive the title of pro-basilica. Pope Leo XIII granted this title on March 19, 1901.
Construction of the basilica took place between 1898 and 1912. Józef Stefan Pomian-Pomianowski designed the church in the neo-Gothic style, also called Vistula Gothic. This building served as an addition to St. Alexander's Church, built earlier from 1875 to 1877. The construction was led by Father Prelate Grzegorz Augustynik.
Finally, Bishop Augustyn Łosiński of Kielce consecrated the basilica on September 29, 1912. Since then, it has stood as a center of faith and devotion in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
Today, the basilica remains a cherished spiritual site and a beautiful example of neo-Gothic architecture in Poland.
