The Basilica of the Holy Blood in Báta, also called the Church of the Holy Blood, is Hungary’s only Holy Blood shrine. It stands above the village of Báta in Tolna County, where a major medieval monastery and pilgrimage site once flourished.
Although the present church was consecrated in 1939, it remained quiet for decades. However, as the 600th anniversary of its first recorded mention approached, interest in the site began to grow once again. Consequently, pilgrims gradually returned, drawn by both its spiritual and historical significance.
To support this renewed devotion, local leaders and church officials collaborated on a series of renovations. They repaired key parts of the building, enhanced visitor access, and revitalized the surrounding area. As a result, the church regained national attention and once more became a focal point for pilgrims.
Importantly, this revival reached a high point on September 26, 2020, when Pope Francis granted the church the title of basilica minor. This designation, which recognizes religious and cultural significance, marked a major milestone in the church’s modern history. Furthermore, the announcement brought pride and joy to the local Catholic community.
With this honor, the Church of the Holy Blood became the first basilica in Tolna County. Moreover, it joined just two other churches in the Diocese of Pécs with the same title. Clearly, this recognition affirmed the church’s renewed role in Hungary’s Catholic heritage.
Today, visitors continue to arrive in search of prayer, reflection, and historical connection. In many ways, the basilica stands as both a place of worship and a symbol of lasting faith. Through restoration efforts, growing devotion, and official recognition, the Church of the Holy Blood has fully reclaimed its place as a spiritual and cultural treasure.
