The Royal CollegiateBasilica of San Isidoro, often called San Isidoro de León, is a Christian church in León, Spain. It is one of the most important Romanesque sites in the country. The church is famous for its history, architecture, sculpture, and preserved Romanesque treasures. Many visitors come to admire its Royal Pantheon, located at the foot of the church. This space features original capitals and Romanesque wall paintings, offering a rare view of early medieval art.
At first, the site held a monastery dedicated to Saint Pelayo. However, many believe a Roman temple stood there earlier. Later, after the remains of Saint Isidore were brought to León, the church was renamed in his honor. This change increased its religious and cultural importance.
King Ferdinand I and Queen Sancha began the Romanesque construction during the 11th century. They added features that still draw attention today. The southern façade holds two beautiful doors: the Puerta del Cordero and the Puerta del Perdón. Another notable door, the Puerta Norte or Chapter House, shows the earliest Romanesque art in León.
As time passed, builders added Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements to the complex. These layers show how the church evolved across centuries. Even with these changes, Romanesque art remains the highlight of the basilica.
The Royal Pantheon, where kings and queens are buried, stands out as a unique feature. Its paintings and design reflect the deep faith and power of León’s royal family. Because of its importance, the Spanish government named it a Historic Artistic Monument on February 9, 1910. Today, the basilica remains a symbol of León’s rich religious and artistic history.
