The Basilica of the Madonna della Neve serves as the mother church of Copertino, a historic town in southern Italy. Goffredo di Conversano, a Norman count, ordered its construction in 1088 as both a political and religious statement. The church originally honored the Virgin of the Assumption, a title that reflected widespread medieval Marian devotion.

As Copertino gained importance, the church also became more prominent. In 1255, Manfredi, who held the titles of Prince of Taranto and Count of Copertino, elevated its status to that of a royal basilica. He also rededicated it to the Virgin of the Snows, drawing inspiration from the Roman legend associated with Santa Maria Maggiore. This change connected Copertino’s faith to a wider spiritual tradition.

Over time, the basilica hosted major feast days, religious ceremonies, and public celebrations. Parishioners filled the space during liturgical events, and the church remained a central part of community life. Moreover, its role extended beyond the local population, as visitors and pilgrims increasingly took interest in its history and architecture.

In addition, local leaders preserved the church’s traditions while ensuring it stayed active in the modern religious landscape. They supported restorations and events that reinforced its place in the spiritual life of Copertino.

As a result, on 3 July 2011, the Holy See officially recognized its importance by designating it a minor basilica. This title marked a significant milestone in the church’s long and meaningful legacy.

Today, the Basilica of the Madonna della Neve continues to inspire devotion. It stands not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural and historical landmark that connects the town to centuries of faith.
