The Cesena Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, is the main Catholic place of worship in Cesena, Romagna. It serves as the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Cesena-Sarsina. Originally, the cathedral was located inside the Murata, the raised citadel area of Cesena, which is now occupied by the Sferisterio. However, in 1385, the Malatesta family decided to move the cathedral to its current location. Andrea Malatesta commissioned the reconstruction of the cathedral in a Romanesque-Gothic style, marking the start of a new chapter for the church.
Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent various changes. Different architectural styles influenced these transformations. Each change reflected the era's artistic and cultural shifts. Despite these modifications, the cathedral gradually returned to its original design. This return to its roots was achieved during the final restoration in the second half of the 20th century.
