The Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montallegro is located in the hamlet of Montallegro, Rapallo, within the metropolitan city of Genoa. Situated on a hill, it stands 612 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area. As a result, the sanctuary holds great significance as one of the foremost Marian shrines in both Genoa and Liguria.
In 1557, the people of Rapallo began constructing the basilica. By 1558, they completed it. The initiative began after a miraculous event when the Virgin Mary appeared to Giovanni Chichizola, a local peasant, on July 2, 1557. Motivated by this apparition, the community decided to build not only the basilica but also a shelter for pilgrims. Over time, the sanctuary grew into an essential place of worship.
In 1896, Luigi Rovelli, the architect, designed the current marble façade. This design was part of a significant restoration. The restoration was finished and inaugurated on June 21, 1896, marking a memorable moment for the basilica. Furthermore, in 1739, the Virgin Mary was officially named the patron saint of Rapallo. This recognition still plays a crucial role in the town’s identity. The Marian monogram, consisting of the intertwined letters M and A, now appears on the municipal coat of arms. The emblem also features two griffins, which support a royal crown.
Additionally, Our Lady of Montallegro is the co-patroness of the Diocese of Chiavari. Pope Leo XIII confirmed this title in a papal bull issued on December 3, 1892. Moreover, Giovanni Battista Campodonico composed the hymn Splende in alto in honor of Our Lady of Montallegro. This hymn has strengthened the community’s devotion to the Virgin Mary. Through both prayer and music, the community continues to honor her memory and preserve her legacy.
