The Basilica of SS. Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg, Bavaria, stands as an important Catholic parish. It grew from the Roman tomb of Saint Afra, who was martyred in 304. This basilica represents a fine example of Gothic architecture in Germany. Inside, it features three large Renaissance altars, each considered a masterpiece of German sculpture.
The church’s bell tower, crowned with an onion dome, dominates the skyline south of Augsburg. This design influenced many Baroque towers across Bavaria. In 1577, the church officially became the Benedictine Abbey of Saints Ulrich and Afra, and by 1643–1644, it gained the status of an imperial abbey.
The basilica hosted a concert by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on October 18, 1777, marking a significant cultural event. Pope Pius VI celebrated Mass there on May 4, 1782. After secularization in 1802, the Bavarian State took ownership of the church. In 1810, the church became a parish church. In 1937, Pope Pius XI declared it a minor basilica.
On May 4, 1987, Pope John Paul II visited the basilica, recognizing its continued importance. Over the centuries, the Basilica of SS. Ulrich and Afra has remained a symbol of spiritual and cultural significance in Augsburg.
