St. Alexander und Theodor is the church of the Benedictine Abbey of Ottobeuren, located in Unterallgäu, southern Germany. This church, part of the former imperial abbey, is a notable example of late Baroque architecture. It stands along the Oberschwäbische Barockstraße, a route known for its Baroque churches.
Unlike many other churches, St. Alexander und Theodor faces south instead of the traditional east. This unique orientation distinguishes it from most Christian churches. The church is dedicated to Saint Theodore of Tyre and Saint Alexander of Rome, both martyrs.
In 1804, the church passed to the Kingdom of Bavaria after the abbey dissolved. Despite this change, it remained an important religious site. In 1926, Pope Pius XI granted the church the honorary title of Basilica minor, acknowledging its significance within the Catholic Church.
Today, visitors admire the church’s Baroque interior, including frescoes, sculptures, and woodwork. These elements highlight the skill of the Baroque artists. St. Alexander und Theodor serves as a key destination for those interested in the region’s religious and architectural history. The church remains a symbol of the region's cultural and spiritual legacy.
