St. Mary’s Basilica, officially The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a historic Catholic church in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It stands at 231 North 3rd Street, at the corner of East Monroe Street. Notably, it is the oldest Catholic parish in the greater Phoenix area.
Originally called St. Mary’s Church, it received the title of basilica in 1985. Pope John Paul II granted this honor during his visit to Arizona. As a result, the church became a key spiritual symbol for local Catholics.
The parish began in 1881 with a small adobe church. However, as the city grew, the parish needed a larger building. Therefore, construction of the current church started in 1902 and finished in 1914. The parish dedicated it in 1915.
From 1895 onward, Franciscan Friars served the growing Catholic community. For decades, they provided spiritual leadership and guidance. Eventually, the Diocese of Phoenix took over, and its clergy now lead the parish.
The architecture combines Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles. Together, these styles reflect the cultural history of the Southwest. Moreover, the church’s towers, domes, and arches create a striking presence.
Inside, the basilica features Arizona’s largest stained glass window collection. These colorful windows add warmth and sacred beauty. In addition, a 26-rank pipe organ built by the Schantz Organ Company fills the space with rich sound.
Until 1924, St. Mary’s was the only Catholic parish in Phoenix. Consequently, it served as the center of Catholic life in the region. Even today, it remains a vibrant part of the community.
Above all, St. Mary’s Basilica stands as a symbol of faith, tradition, and architectural beauty. For locals and visitors alike, it continues to inspire and welcome all who enter.
