Aire Cathedral, or Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste d’Aire, stands in Aire-sur-l’Adour, in the Landes département of southwestern France. It attracts worshippers and visitors because of its architectural beauty, historical importance, and central role in local religious life. Originally, the bishops of Aire used the cathedral as their seat. This made it a key center for ecclesiastical administration and spiritual guidance. In 1801, Napoleon’s Concordat abolished the diocese, which changed the local religious structure. Despite this, the faithful continued to gather at the cathedral for worship and community events. Over the following decades, church authorities recognized the need to restore the diocese. By 1822, they reinstated it, reestablishing Aire Cathedral as the episcopal center and reaffirming its regional importance.
In 1857, church leaders renamed the diocese as the Diocese of Aire and Dax. This reflected the growing significance of both towns in the ecclesiastical structure. The cathedral continued to serve as the administrative and spiritual heart of the diocese. It hosted religious ceremonies, local gatherings, and community events. However, in 1933, church leadership moved the bishop’s seat to Dax Cathedral. This made Aire Cathedral a co-cathedral, a role it has kept ever since. It preserved its historical importance while sharing episcopal functions with Dax. Furthermore, French authorities recognized its architectural and historical value. In 1906, they listed the cathedral as a national monument. This action ensures that generations of visitors and parishioners can enjoy its grandeur, historical relevance, and spiritual presence in the heart of Aire-sur-l’Adour.
