The Church of Sant'Andrea stands in the historic center of Viareggio, located at Via Sant'Andrea 55. In 1836, Duke Carlo Ludovico di Borbone of Lucca ordered the construction of a new parish dedicated to Saint Andrew, which significantly changed the town’s religious landscape. A few years later, in 1839, the Servants of Mary took responsibility for the parish. Then, in 1840, Pope Gregory XVI issued a papal brief, permanently assigning the church and parish to the Servites.
The construction of the church and rectory was completed in 1842, following a design by engineer Michele Cervelli from Lucca. This development came after Archbishop Giovanni Domenico Stefanelli's decree, which separated the new parish from the Church of Sant'Antonio. As a result, the church quickly became a central part of Viareggio’s religious and cultural life. Over time, it has grown into a significant place of worship for both locals and visitors alike.
In 1938, the Luigi Magni Foundry in San Concordio, Lucca, cast the church’s four bells, which remain the oldest in Viareggio. These bells continue to serve an important role in church services, marking significant events. Moreover, their sound symbolizes the town’s deep-rooted traditions, connecting the present with the past.
