The Cathedral Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in the heart of Sandomierz, one of Poland’s oldest towns. Built between 1350 and 1370, it began as a Gothic church designed to serve a growing religious community.

By the late 1800s, the cathedral again required restoration. Father Józef Karsznicki led this effort with vision and care. He introduced a brick façade and brought back older Gothic features. As a result, the church once again stood strong and beautiful.
Since 1818, the building has served as the cathedral for the Diocese of Sandomierz. Then, in 1960, it earned the title of minor basilica, recognizing its spiritual and cultural value.
Today, the cathedral continues to welcome pilgrims, visitors, and locals alike. Some come to pray; others admire the rich artwork and history.
