The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Apostle in Eger, Hungary, is one of the most important churches in the region. The construction of the cathedral began in 1831 and finished in 1837. Archbishop János László Pyrker commissioned the building. József Hild, a renowned architect, designed it. The cathedral combines classical design with Hungarian artistic elements. Its Greek-style entrance is especially impressive. The porch features Corinthian columns that rise 17 meters tall.
The facade of the cathedral includes statues of saints. These include St. Stephen, St. Ladislaus, and the apostles Peter and Paul. The interior of the cathedral is equally grand. It has three naves, with a transept dividing the nave from the chancel. The dome rises 40 meters above the ground. It is richly decorated, adding to the church’s beauty.
At the rear of the cathedral are two bell towers. These towers balance the structure, enhancing its symmetry. The cathedral serves as a place of worship, a symbol of faith, and a cultural landmark in Eger. It continues to hold a central role in the community.
