The Sanctuary of San Pascual Baylón, also known as El Sant, is located in Villarreal, Castellón, Spain. This sacred complex includes the International Eucharistic Votive Temple, the Royal Chapel, the Pouet del Sant Museum, and the Cloistered Convent of the Poor Clares. Pope John Paul II declared the Votive Temple a minor basilica, emphasizing its importance.
The convent dates back to the 16th century. It became famous due to its association with Saint Pascual Baylón, who lived, died, and was buried there. As a result, the site became an important pilgrimage destination. The Royal Chapel was built in the 17th century to house Saint Pascual's remains. This chapel was the first Valencian Baroque monument in both importance and time.
In 1936, a fire destroyed the original convent church and Baroque chapel during the Spanish Civil War. Despite the destruction, the temple remains open for worship, though it is not fully complete.
In 1992, the new Royal Chapel was inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I of Spain. This chapel represents the site’s resilience. Restoration efforts preserved key features of the monastery, including the cloister, staircase, and De Profundis hall. In the refectory, the seats occupied by Saint Pascual and Blessed Andrew Hibernon have been preserved.
Notably, the bell towers house a 72-bell carillon and a set of 12 ringing bells. These include the largest ringing bell in the world. These bells contribute to the sanctuary’s unique cultural and religious heritage.
