The Basilica of St. Andrew is one of the most iconic churches in Komárno, Slovakia. It stands at the intersection of Svätoondrejská, Palatínova, and Školská streets, directly across from the Danube Museum. With its elegant Baroque form, it continues to serve both as a place of worship and a symbol of the city’s long-standing faith tradition.
Originally, the Jesuit order built a church on this site between 1674 and 1677. The tower also acted as the city’s watchtower, and a two-meter iron statue of St. Andrew stood at its top. Surrounding the church was a cemetery, emphasizing its central role in community life.
However, as Komárno expanded, the small church could no longer accommodate the growing number of parishioners. Therefore, a new and larger church was constructed between 1723 and 1734, again dedicated to St. Andrew. Materials from the dismantled Nové Zámky fortress were reused for this project. Tragically, in 1738, part of the structure collapsed after a carriage hit a weakened section of the wall.
Nevertheless, the people of Komárno rebuilt it with determination. Over time, the church gained the distinct Baroque appearance we see today. It remained a central site for faith and local gatherings.
Later, on April 20, 2018, Pope Francis elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica. As a result, it became the second basilica in the Trnava Archdiocese.
Today, the Basilica of St. Andrew continues to welcome visitors, pilgrims, and the faithful. While many come to pray, others arrive to admire its beauty and history. Altogether, the church stands as a living monument to the city's enduring spiritual and cultural identity.
