The Basilica of Our Lady of Buenos Aires stands proudly in the Caballito neighborhood. It remains one of the city’s most admired and inspiring landmarks. Originally, its story began on March 10, 1894, when Monsignor Antonio Espinosa blessed the foundation stone at the corner of Gaona and Espinosa. From that moment, a remarkable journey of faith began.

Later that year, on August 10, the first chapel opened its doors to the people of Buenos Aires. In 1895, the community celebrated Our Lady of Bonaria for the first time. The ceremony took place where the parish school now stands, connecting faith and education.

As years passed, devotion inspired further growth. On September 21, 1897, Nicolás González built a new chapel. Monsignor Espinosa blessed it with deep gratitude and hope. Two decades later, on August 4, 1918, parishioners laid the foundation stone for the present basilica. Shortly afterward, a Catalan marble statue of Our Lady of Mercy was unveiled to honor the 700th anniversary of the Mercedarian Order.

After years of dedication, the basilica opened on December 3, 1932. Much later, in the early 1990s, restoration renewed its grandeur and preserved its historic character.

Today, the basilica’s neo-Gothic design impresses every visitor. Its twin domes rise seventy-five meters above the city. Light filters through stained-glass windows, filling the interior with color and reverence. Moreover, the elegant altar, crowned by a radiant dome, displays images of Our Lady of Mercy and Our Lady of Buenos Aires on a symbolic boat.

Finally, the basilica welcomes everyone daily. Admission is free, inviting visitors to experience its beauty, history, and devotion.
