York Minster is a large Anglican cathedral in the city of York, in North Yorkshire, England. First, its full name is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York. Overall, it stands as one of the most important churches in the country. In particular, the minster serves as the home of the archbishop of York. As a result, this role places the church second in rank within the Church of England.

In addition, the minster acts as the main church for the diocese and the province of York. At the same time, a dean and chapter manage the building and its daily activities. For example, they organize services, protect the structure, and welcome visitors. Because of its value, York Minster holds Grade I listed status. Furthermore, it is a scheduled monument, which means the law protects it for its historical importance.

Historically, the first church on this site appeared in the year 627. At that time, the word “minster” came from the Anglo-Saxon period. Originally, it described a church used for teaching and missionary work. Over time, the meaning changed. Nevertheless, the title still reflects the church’s long religious and educational history.

Structurally, parts of the undercroft use stone from around 1160. However, builders constructed most of the present building between 1220 and 1472. For instance, the north and south transepts show the Early English Gothic style. Meanwhile, the nave and chapter house display the Decorated Gothic style. Later, builders completed the eastern arm and central tower in the Perpendicular Gothic style.

Moreover, York Minster keeps most of its medieval stained glass. Because of this, it remains rare among European churches. Most notably, the east window shows the Last Judgment. In fact, it forms the largest area of medieval stained glass in the world. Finally, the north transept contains the Five Sisters window, which includes five very tall panels filled with pale grey glass.
