The Basilica of Saint-Régis de Lalouvesc, located in the village of Lalouvesc in Ardèche, was built between 1865 and 1877. This Catholic church houses the relics of Saint Jean-François Régis, the “Apostle of Vivarais.” He died in Lalouvesc while preaching during a parish mission. Since 2018, the basilica has also contained the relics of Saint Thérèse Couderc.
The basilica has a unique dual purpose. It serves both as a major pilgrimage center and as the local parish church. Pilgrims visit the basilica to venerate the relics of Saint Régis, while the local community attends regular mass and religious events. The church is integral to the spiritual life of the village.
The basilica's design was created by Pierre Bossan, the architect behind Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon. Bossan’s work mixes a variety of architectural styles. These include ancient Greek, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, and Moorish influences. The combination of these styles gives the building a striking, eclectic appearance. The design reflects both historical traditions and creative innovation. Visitors are often captivated by the unique fusion of these architectural elements.
Beyond its architectural beauty, the basilica stands as a place of deep spiritual significance. It represents the intersection of faith, history, and art. Whether for pilgrims seeking devotion or visitors appreciating its artistry, the Basilica of Saint-Régis de Lalouvesc remains an enduring symbol of religious and cultural heritage.
