Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral stands in the center of Ho Chi Minh City and remains a major religious landmark. People also call it the Immaculate Conception CathedralBasilica, and it serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Saigon. Moreover, the church symbolizes Catholicism in Vietnam and attracts large numbers of visitors each year. Tourists admire its red brick exterior, twin bell towers, and European design. French architects built the church in the nineteenth century and introduced Western architectural style to the city. Initially, residents named the building Saigon Church; however, church leaders adopted the name Notre Dame Church in 1959. At that time, they placed the Statue of Our Lady of Peace in front of the cathedral. As a result, the surrounding square became a meaningful gathering place. In addition, the cathedral hosts major religious ceremonies. Clergy ordain bishops and priests there, and church leaders welcome representatives from the Holy See. Therefore, the cathedral continues to shape religious life while contributing strongly to the cultural identity of modern Vietnam.
