The Basilica of Our Lady of Assumption in Kamanayakkanpatti, located in the Diocese of Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu, attracts thousands of pilgrims every year because of its spiritual significance. Moreover, it has a rich historical background that fascinates visitors. St. Thomas established the Christian community in this region. Later, European missionaries discovered that local Christians followed a tradition distinct from the Latin rite. The statue of Our Lady is considered miraculous, therefore devotees from far and wide visit to seek blessings.

St. John de Brito built the original church in 1684. As a result, it became one of the oldest churches in the region. Around 1690, a girl who had fallen into an open well and died returned to life after prayers to Mary. The statue survived a fire in 1748 that destroyed the church. Consequently, the local community’s faith strengthened further.

The basilica played a central role in the Madurai Mission. Today, it continues to inspire devotion. The feast of the Assumption of Mary occurs every 15 August. Devotees participate with great pomp and fervor. In addition, a special ritual called Kumbidu Sevai forms an important part of the celebrations.

Pope Francis raised the church to the status of a minor basilica on 15 August 2023, coinciding with the feast day. Therefore, it now holds global recognition. Pilgrims come not only to seek blessings but also to witness centuries of faith, devotion, and miracles.
