Basilica of Our Lady of the Snows, Firavitoba, Colombia
The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Snows stands in the town of Firavitoba, Boyacá. It is one of Colombia’s most admired Catholic temples. The church honors the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Snows. It also serves as the parish seat for the local community within the Archdiocese of Tunja. Moreover, it represents devotion, creativity, and unity among the people of Firavitoba.
The basilica displays a beautiful Neo-Gothic style that draws attention from visitors and pilgrims alike. Its structure measures 76 meters in length, 27 meters in width, and 72 meters in height. Inside, it has three naves, colorful stained glass windows, and a marble floor that adds elegance to the sacred space. Furthermore, the temple includes a finely crafted canopy that enhances the harmony of its interior design.
The creation of this basilica tells a story of faith and perseverance. Two devoted priests, Ignacio Ramón Abella and Luis Abdénago Zambrano, worked closely with the community for more than thirty years. Together, they led every stage of construction and decoration. Their love for their town and their faith inspired a work that still moves hearts today. Consequently, the temple stands as both a spiritual home and a work of art.
On October 18, 2019, the Holy See granted the church the title of Minor Basilica. Later, on December 28, the faithful of Firavitoba celebrated the official proclamation. During that joyful ceremony, church leaders and residents joined to thank God and honor their Virgin patron. In this way, the basilica continues to unite people through prayer, beauty, and tradition, serving as a lasting symbol of faith for future generations.

There is no regular passenger railway station that directly serves Firavitoba or the basilica. The region’s transport is principally by road rather than by train.
🚌 Roadways
Firavitoba is reachable by road from major nearby cities. From Colombia’s capital Bogotá you can take a bus to Sogamoso (about 3½ hours) and then a short bus or taxi onward to Firavitoba.
Once in Firavitoba the basilica is located centrally in the town (near Plaza de Sor Gabriela) and is well-signposted.
