The Basilica of Esquipulas stands proudly in southeastern Guatemala. Locals and visitors call it the Cathedral Basilica of the Black Christ of Esquipulas. In Spanish, people refer to it as Catedral Basílica del Cristo Negro de Esquipulas.

Although Guatemala has many historic churches, this one remains unique. It is the largest Catholic church in Central America and southern Mexico. Furthermore, it is the only church in the Americas with four bell towers.
In addition to its size, it holds several honors. The Church recognizes it as a cathedral, a minor basilica, and a Catholic sanctuary. These titles show its spiritual and cultural importance.
Even though the current structure dates to the 1700s, devotion to the Black Christ began much earlier. Over time, the church grew in size and meaning. Eventually, it became a symbol of national pride and religious identity.
Architecturally, the white walls, high towers, and peaceful courtyard make it impressive. Inside, the statue rests above the altar, drawing silent devotion.
