The Basilica of St. Andrew, also called St. Andrew's Catholic Church, stands proudly in Roanoke, Virginia. It was built between 1900 and 1902 in the High Victorian Gothic style. The church uses buff brick on a solid stone foundation to create its strong presence. Designed by William P. Ginther from Akron, Ohio, the building features a cruciform plan with two tall Gothic towers flanking the main entrance. Each tower has small lancet windows, large pointed-arch stained-glass tracery windows, and double pointed-arch openings at the belfry. Additionally, the property includes a rectory built earlier in 1887, which adds to the historic character of the site.
The church replaced a smaller brick church built in 1883, and it cost $60,000 to construct. In addition, $40,000 went toward interior appointments and trim, making the building a landmark in Roanoke. After the Second Vatican Council introduced new liturgical practices, the parish decided to renovate the church. First, they installed a freestanding altar so that the priest could celebrate Mass facing the congregation. However, the original ornate high altar remained intact behind it. Later, the parish replaced the simple freestanding altar with a marble one that remains today. At the same time, they removed two side altars, a long altar rail, and some iconography. Furthermore, the lighting was improved to brighten the church’s interior.
From 2010 to 2014, the parish completed its most expensive renovation. They replaced the large pipe organ with an electric one but kept the pipes for decoration. Finally, in 2014, they removed and restored the original steeples. Then, on September 6, 2023, the Dicastery for Divine Worship officially granted the church the title of minor basilica, marking a proud milestone in its history.
