The Basilica of Our Lady of Health stands as the main religious site in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico. Builders placed it atop an ancient Purépecha pyramid. It served as the cathedral until 1580, when the diocese moved to Morelia and built a new cathedral. However, the basilica retained its importance. Consequently, the Vatican granted it basilica status on January 23, 1923.
Don Vasco de Quiroga, the first bishop of Michoacán, ordered the basilica’s construction. He actively supported indigenous peoples and education. Additionally, he founded the Michoacana University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo. His tomb remains inside the basilica. On December 22, 2020, Pope Francis declared him “Venerable.” This recognition opened the cause for his beatification.
The basilica dates back to the 16th century. Its design followed the Granada Cathedral’s plan. Originally, builders planned a pentagonal chapel surrounded by other chapels. However, they never finished all of them.
Inside the basilica, visitors can see a sacred image of the Virgin of Health. The figure measures 1.3 meters and comes from corn cane paste. Don Vasco de Quiroga commissioned it for a hospital he founded in Santa Marta. He named her Salus Infirmorum, meaning Health of the Sick. Many Michoacán residents deeply revere her.
Furthermore, Pope Leo XIII approved her papal coronation on December 8, 1899. Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain also showed devotion to her. During his visit to Morelia, Pope Francis honored a replica of the image. Another replica is venerated in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Today, the Virgin of Health serves as the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Morelia and health ministries across Mexico. Her feast day falls on December 8, the day of the Immaculate Conception.
