The Basilica of St. George the Martyr and Sanctuary of the Passion of the Lord is a parish church in Ziębice. It belongs to the Ziębice deanery of the Archdiocese of Wrocław. The church became a minor basilica in 2008. Since 2024, the Polish government has listed it as a historical monument. This status confirms its religious and cultural importance in Lower Silesia.
The church has a long and layered history. Builders began work on it in the 13th century. It has two naves and features two stepped portals in the Romanesque-Gothic style. These details show the medieval roots of the building. In addition, the chancel was built in the 16th century. That section reflects a later, more Renaissance influence. Meanwhile, St. Mary’s Chapel, dating from the 15th century, adds another chapter to the church’s architectural story.
Moreover, the church’s interior contains valuable religious art. Several medieval altars stand inside the basilica. These altars include rich carvings and original painted surfaces. They display sacred themes and centuries-old craftsmanship. Because of this, visitors often include pilgrims, art historians, and tourists alike.
The basilica also plays a central role in the town’s spiritual life. It holds regular Mass, devotions, and events. Its location in the town center makes it easy to visit. Furthermore, it continues to connect people through worship and tradition.
Today, the Basilica of St. George the Martyr serves both the faithful and lovers of history. Its sacred role and cultural value remain strong. As a result, it stands not just as a church, but as a true treasure of Ziębice. It continues to preserve both local heritage and deep spiritual meaning.
