The Collegiate Basilica of St. George in Kętrzyn remains the best-preserved fortified church in Masuria. Builders began its construction in 1359, choosing the site of a former watchtower. Over the next 150 years, they gradually expanded the structure.

At first, it stood as a single-nave hall church in the town’s southwestern corner. Later, they added defensive porches and a tower with battlements. These additions served both spiritual and military needs. In the early 15th century, they built a second tower to house the bells. Therefore, the church became both a place of worship and a stronghold.

By the late 15th century, the church took on a new form. Builders converted it into a three-nave pseudo-basilica. They added a northern aisle while keeping the central and southern ones within the earlier outline. As a result, the layout became more complex and visually striking.

In 1500, a fire damaged the church. During its restoration, builders shifted the axis slightly. Consequently, the chancel no longer aligns perfectly with the central nave. From the center, only two of the three eastern windows are visible.

Inside, several features stand out. The crystal vaults, completed in 1515 by Master Matz of Gdańsk, showcase late Gothic craftsmanship. Additionally, the 16th-century pulpit adds artistic value. The current organ, rebuilt in 1975, includes 43 stops and honors the earlier work of Josue Mosengel.

Moreover, the church holds the 1597 tombstone of Krzysztof Schenk von Tautenburg. Visitors also discover a solitary cell beneath the high tower, accessible from inside the church.

Altogether, the basilica blends defense, devotion, and history. It continues to welcome visitors who admire its architecture, artifacts, and enduring legacy.
