The Basilica of Our Lady Help of Christians in Brezje is Slovenia’s most important pilgrimage site. Located near the Gorenjska highway, it offers visitors easy access and a peaceful atmosphere. Known as the Slovenian National Shrine, it holds a unique place in the country’s spiritual life.

In 1999, the Slovenian Bishops’ Conference recognized its growing importance and officially designated it as the national pilgrimage center. Since then, the Archdiocese of Ljubljana has guided its pastoral work. In addition, the nearby Franciscan Monastery, built in 1898, continues to support the basilica through daily ministry and hospitality.

Every year, the basilica welcomes more than 400,000 pilgrims. The largest gathering takes place on 24 May, the Feast of Mary Help of Christians. Moreover, the June pilgrimage for the sick and elderly, along with the Feast of the Assumption on 15 August, draw thousands of faithful from across Slovenia and beyond.

Inside the basilica, the atmosphere reflects centuries of prayer and devotion. The main altar is dedicated to Saint Vitus. To the right, visitors find a beloved image of Mary Help of Christians housed in a small chapel. Interestingly, this chapel sits within a larger one—a design inspired by the Porziuncula chapel in Assisi.

As visitors explore the site, they often describe a sense of calm and inner peace. While some come for tradition and others for healing, many return year after year. Ultimately, the basilica continues to serve not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of national unity and faith.
