Basilica of the Assumption of Mary, Lutina, Slovakia
The Basilica of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos in Ľutina is the oldest Greek Catholic minor basilica in Slovakia. It is located in the Sabinov District and serves as a major pilgrimage site for Greek Catholics across the country.
In 1851, the spiritual significance of the village grew after reported apparitions of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. During these events, he appeared to Zuzana Feketová and gave her a Marian icon, which became central to the community's devotion. Because of this, Ľutina was no longer part of the Hanigov parish; instead, the parish was moved to Ľutina.
Originally, a wooden church stood in the village and served the faithful for many years. However, as pilgrim numbers increased, the structure became too small. A new stone church was completed in 1908. Sadly, the original wooden church burned down just before the new building was finished.
After the Greek Catholic Church was restored in 1968, the number of visitors began to rise each year. In 1988, during the celebration marking the end of the Marian Year, Ordinary Ján Hirka read an apostolic letter from Pope John Paul II. The letter officially elevated the church and its facilities to the status of a minor basilica.
Today, the main pilgrimage occurs annually on August 15th, marking the Feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Each year, thousands of pilgrims gather to honor the Theotokos in prayer and celebration.
