Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows, Sastin-Strazé, Slovakia
The Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows, located in Šaštín-Stráže, is one of Slovakia’s most important Catholic pilgrimage sites. Built in 1736 under the design of Matej Vépi, it continues to draw pilgrims from across the country and beyond.
At the heart of the basilica is the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, created in 1564. Although the artist is unknown, the sculpture reflects the late Gothic Danubian style. In 1732, Archbishop Imrich Esterházi approved public veneration of the statue. Since then, devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows has grown steadily.
Each year, thousands of pilgrims visit the basilica, especially during Pentecost and the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15. These celebrations fill the town with prayer, music, and processions.
Moreover, the basilica's interior is rich in religious art. Paintings by Jean Joseph Chamant and Lukáš Kraker decorate the church, enhancing its spiritual and artistic value. These works contribute to the basilica’s unique character and beauty.
The statue stands on a late Baroque altar, adding to its visual significance. It also gave rise to the Šaštín form of pietism, a local expression of Marian devotion.
In 1964, the church was elevated to the status of minor basilica, acknowledging its religious importance. Since 2009, the Bratislava Eparchy has held annual pilgrimages here in honor of the Co-Suffering Mother of God.
Because of its history, architecture, and living faith, the basilica remains a cherished spiritual center. Visitors continue to find comfort, inspiration, and connection in this sacred place.
