The Basilica di San Filippo d’Agira, also known as the Basilica of St. Philip, is an important Roman Catholic church in Aci San Filippo, Sicily. In 2009, the Vatican granted it the title of Minor Basilica. The church honors St. Philip of Agira, a Christian missionary who is believed to have spread Christianity in Sicily during the early centuries.
The current basilica replaced an older church destroyed in the 1693 earthquake. Architect Francesco Battaglia designed the new structure, and construction took place between 1777 and 1784. A 1693 crucifix by sculptor Gennaro Gallo is displayed inside. This crucifix survived the earthquake and stands as a symbol of resilience. It holds great significance for both the faithful and visitors.
