The Cathedral of Santa Maria della Marina stands in San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy. First, construction began in 1847. Then, architect Gaetano Ferri took charge. At that time, the town needed a larger church. But construction paused often. Still, by 1908, it opened. Later, they finished more parts.
After the war, they added the façade. Also, they built the front staircase. They used local travertine. As a result, the style looks elegant. Then, in 1986, it became a cathedral.
Inside, the space feels grand. It has three naves. In the apse, you’ll see a large fresco. It covers 400 square meters. Moreover, Father Ugolino da Belluno painted it. The scenes show saints and the sea. So, it honors local life and faith.
Besides that, the church holds treasures. First, there’s a 17th-century painting. It shows the Virgin of Victory. Next, you’ll find relics of saints. These include St. Urbica and St. Illuminato. Furthermore, there’s a fine bas-relief. Aldo Sergiacomi sculpted it. In addition, Armando Marchegiani painted Jesus’ Baptism.
Meanwhile, the church remembers lost sailors. It keeps a list called "Albo dei caduti civili del Mare". This list honors those lost at sea.
Every year, in July, the town celebrates. The event is the Festa della Madonna della Marina. First, boats gather for a sea parade. Then, they carry the Madonna’s image. After that, the bishop gives a blessing. A wreath drops into the sea. Later, people walk back to the church.
In short, the cathedral blends history, art, and faith. Above all, it unites the town.
