The Church of San Costanzo, surrounded by pine-covered hills, stands as one of Perugia’s oldest and most cherished landmarks. Located in the Porta San Pietro quarter—often called “the beautiful village” for its graceful architecture and historical richness—it reflects the city’s deep spiritual roots.
Built in 1027, the church took on greater importance when Bishop Viviano enlarged and consecrated it in 1205. Even after centuries, visitors can still admire its original entrance, with carved marble jambs featuring delicate branches and mythical animals. The architrave above the doorway presents Christ offering a blessing, showcasing the artistry of its early builders.
In 1889, Guglielmo Calderini, a leading architect from Perugia, redesigned the structure in neo-Romanesque style using pink stone from Assisi, which gave the church its soft, warm appearance and strengthened its connection to local tradition. During the same restoration, artisans from the Biscarini furnace contributed new decorative elements, including a terracotta bas-relief of Saint Costanzo in half-length.
This blend of medieval foundation and 19th-century revival gives the church a unique character. It continues to serve as both a place of worship and a living monument to Perugia’s artistic and religious history.
In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI officially elevated it to the title of Basilica minor, recognizing its enduring cultural and spiritual importance.
Today, the Basilica of San Costanzo welcomes worshippers, pilgrims, and visitors seeking peace, beauty, and a deeper connection to centuries of tradition.
