The “Seitai Hoshikai,” also known as the Institute of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, features Our Lady of Akita Shrine. Nestled on a hill outside Akita, Japan, the shrine enjoys a beautiful natural setting. As a result, this serene environment provides a peaceful retreat for all visitors.
God’s creation enhances the beauty of this sacred space. Additionally, the shrine showcases traditional Japanese architectural style, harmonizing with its surroundings. Moreover, the welcoming sisters create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Visitors can thus leave their busy lives behind and open their hearts to the tranquil, holy environment.
For Christians, prayer serves as the foundation of daily life. This principle holds true within Christian communities as well. Consequently, the sisters at Seitai Hoshikai engage in continuous prayer, inviting everyone to join them. This community offers a precious gift in the Niigata Diocese, providing a dedicated space for reflection and spiritual growth.
Since the statue of Mary miraculously shed tears, many pilgrims have visited the shrine. In fact, people travel from both Japan and abroad to witness this extraordinary event. Those who see the tears, along with other visitors, strive to emulate Holy Mary’s example. They reflect on their lives, deepen their faith, and return to daily life renewed and dedicated.
The chapel, known as Our Lady of Akita, features beautiful "irimoya-juso" architecture. Skilled carpenters from Urano Domiya Kogei in Takasaki City constructed it. This traditional style conveys the universal nature of the Catholic Church, emphasizing that Jesus Christ saves everyone, including the Japanese.
After seven years of construction, the chapel was dedicated on May 1, 2002, honoring Mary, Redemptoris Mater, or "Mother of the Redeemer." The statue of Our Lady of Akita graces the left corridor, while Saint Joseph’s statue stands on the right, completing this sacred space.
