San Sepolcro, a Renaissance-style Roman Catholic church and convent, stands in Piacenza, Italy, with a rich history. Builders first constructed the church in the mid-10th century after a pilgrim returned from the Holy Land. However, enemies destroyed the church soon after. By 1055, a Benedictine abbey with a hospital had taken the place of the original church. This new structure, located outside the city walls, also fell victim to wars and invasions. In 1484, the Olivetan Order gained control of the site and began constructing a new monastery.

Alessio Tramello designed the church, and builders completed its construction between 1513 and 1534. They dedicated the church to the Holy Sepulchre, but neither the original front nor the current portal came from Tramello’s design. The exact origins of these parts remain unclear. In 1602, Antonio Beduschi contributed works to the church, including Martyrdom of St. Stephen and a Pietà. These pieces continue to adorn the church today. Over time, the building experienced several changes. In 1796, during the Napoleonic period, authorities deconsecrated the church, turning it into a military hospital and stable. The Olivetan priests moved to other churches, such as the Annunziata and San Bartolomeo.

In 1903, Bishop Scalabrini reconsecrated the church. Today, the convent forms part of the City Hospital. The church remains famous for its stunning interior. Visitors can admire the chiaroscuro fresco that spirals across the arches of the nave. Additionally, Paolo Perotti’s sculptures decorate the sanctuary, contributing to the church’s artistic legacy.
