BelfortCathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of Saint Christopher of Belfort (Cathédrale Saint-Christophe de Belfort), stands proudly in the city of Belfort, Territoire de Belfort, France. Since 1930, it has been recognized as a national monument, and in 1952, the church earned the title of a minor basilica. Construction of the cathedral began in 1727 and finished in 1750. The businessman Henri Schuller financed the project, and his son later became a canon at the cathedral. Jacques Philippe Mareschal, the king’s engineer from Strasbourg, designed the church. Builders used red sandstone from Offemont quarry, just three kilometers away from Belfort.
Although the church opened for worship in 1750, they did not finish the north tower until 1845. This delay added to the cathedral’s overall majesty. Over time, the church became an iconic symbol of Belfort. One of its treasures is an organ created by Joseph Valtrin in 1752. The cathedral proudly preserves the organ, which is now classified as a historic monument, showcasing its importance in the region’s cultural heritage.
In 1979, the Diocese of Belfort–Montbéliard came into existence. The diocese formed from part of the Archdiocese of Besançon. As a result, the church of Saint Christopher became a cathedral and took on the role of the diocese’s seat. This transformation solidified the cathedral’s status as not only a place of worship but also a significant cultural and spiritual center for the people of Belfort.
