The Basilica of Our Lady of the Tables is located in the heart of Montpellier, on Rue du Collège. It is an important historical monument. This church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Firmin, is a central place of worship for the city. Montpellier is placed under its protection, as well as that of Saint Firmin.
Construction of the basilica began in 1707 under the direction of architect Jean Giral. The work was completed in 1748, after several decades. The building boasts an impressive Baroque style, with elegant and sumptuous details. Initially, the basilica served as the chapel for the Jesuit college, now the Fabre Museum.
In 1802, after the Revolution, the church became the parish church of Notre-Dame des Tables. It then assumed a major role in the religious life of the town. The name of the basilica comes from a tradition linked to the altar, where sacred tablets were placed.
Today, the basilica is a place of pilgrimage and prayer. It is also a cultural site that attracts many visitors. The basilica's architecture, as well as its history, make it a precious heritage for Montpellier.
